fostering saves lives
rescues are the lifeline for animals in shelters with low live release rates. these dedicated groups transfer the animals out of danger and try to find permanent homes for them. Most rescues in the DC Metro area are foster based, meaning they don’t have kennels that animals can stay in during the interim.
this means people who foster are quite literally the reason animals can be taken off of euthanasia lists and have a change at a future.
whether you foster for us, or for another group, we encourage you to at least give it a shot. you may love the feeling of making a difference in an animals life, just like Charlie, pictured on the left.

Of course! We will email and post on social media the animals in need of foster homes. We will include all the information we have about the animals, if you feel like it’s a good fit, you just let us know!
-
All we ask is that you provide a safe place for your foster to stay while we work to find them a forever home!
-
NPA provides all the medical care our animals need before finding their forever homes. This includes, but is not limited to, spay/neuter surgery, age appropriate vaccines, dewormer, monthly preventatives, and a microchip. In addition to basic medical needs, NPA will treat all known illnesses and injuries of the animals in our care.
-
Thanks to our generation donors, NPA is able to provide our foster homes with the support and supplies they need while they’re in foster care. That includes:
- Dog crates
- Puppy pens
- Cat carriers
- Food
- Kitty Litter
- Pee pads
- Support from fellow fosters and certified trainers
-
It all depends! Foster commitments can be short term, a few weeks (think super adoptable puppies and kittens), to a few months (think medical cases or older animals that may take longer to find a home).
If you can only commit for a limited amount of time, that’s fine, we just ask that you let us know as soon as possible so we can secure a sub-foster or boarding facility for the animal.
